67 — The Sabbath in Luke
/THE SABBATH IN LUKE
(LUKE 4:16-37; 6:1-11; 13:10-17; 14:1-6; 23:56)
The Sabbath is a time to know and rest in Jesus and to love and serve others.
The Sabbath is for Preaching about Jesus, so that We Might Recognize Him (4:16-37; cf. 6:6; 13:10)
The Sabbath is for Resting in Jesus (Luke 23:56; cf. Matthew 11:28)
The Sabbath is for Serving Others (not Oppressing Them) (Luke 6:1-5; 13:10-17; cf. 6:6-11; 14:1-6)
Discussion Starters
Monday—Why do you think Luke mentions the Sabbath so many times? What is the Sabbath for?
Tuesday—Does it matter what the church preaches on Sunday? Does it matter how we preach the scriptures? What does the focus need to be?
Wednesday—Read Heidelberg Catechism 103. Have you considered the Sabbath in that way? What does it mean to find rest in Jesus?
Thursday—Why does the Sabbath provoke antagonism? What about it bothers us?
Friday—What are ways you are tempted to be judgmental and self-righteous about the Sabbath? How can you improve your Sunday practice to enjoy fellowship more?
