  1. Jesus Came to Divide and Conquer (vv. 49-53)

    1. A Baptism of Death (vv. 49-50)

    2. A Sword of Division (vv. 51-53)

  2. The Approaching Storm (vv. 54-59)

    1. Heeding the Warnings (vv. 54-57)

    2. The Offer Remains (but the Clock is Ticking) (vv. 58-59)

Discussion Starters

  1. Monday—What is a plea bargain? Why is so hard to imagine a prosecutor ever offering to suffer the punishment of person he is prosecuting?

  2. Tuesday—What does Jesus mean that he came to earth to be baptized? (v. 50) What is his baptism?

  3. Wednesday—Why is it shocking to hear Jesus’ words that he did not come to bring peace, but division? (v. 51) Does that mean he brings all division or just a particular kind of division?

  4. Thursday—What season of history is Jesus confronting people for not being willing to see coming? Why does he call them hypocrites for not rightly interpreting the times?

  5. Friday—When you indulge sin for a time and your conscience tells you God won’t accept you back, what answer does this passage give you? (vv. 58-59)
