Madmen (Psalm 34 | 1 Samuel 21:10-15 | 2 Corinthians 4:7-18; 11:1-12:13)

David teaches us to boast in our weakness for, though it is foolish to the world and humbling, it is where God’s power is made perfect and we find life.

  • Wisdom According to a Madman (vv. 1-22)

  • Apostolic Insanity (2 Corinthians 11:1 - 12:13)

  • Wisdom in the Flesh (John 19:31-36; 2 Corinthians 4:7-18)

Discussion Starters

Monday—What is wisdom literature? How does this differ from common assumptions about wisdom?

Tuesday—Why did David pretend to be insane when he was in Gath (1 Samuel 21:10-15)? How did his insanity save him? What lesson does he want us to glean from that?

Wednesday—Why does Paul claim to be a madman (2 Corinthians 11:23)? Is he ashamed of his foolishness? Why not?

Thursday—Why did God allow Paul to continue to endure affliction (2 Corinthians 12:7-9)? What does that teach you about affliction in your life? Is it proof that God has abandoned you or is angry at you?

Friday—How does the cross of Christ embody the foolishness of Psalm 34? Why is it significant that John 19:36 quotes Psalm 34:20? Does this mean that you will never break a bone? What does it mean for you?
